School Cafeteria

 

St .Joseph School adheres to the nutritional standards of The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP). The staff or our meals provider, The Nutrition Group, prepares nutritionally balanced meals with kid friendly appeal. The goal of our cafeteria is to provide meals that are lower in sodium, sugar and additives, while increasing whole grains, fruits, dark green vegetables and legumes.

Breakfast

Breakfast is served daily from 7:30am to 7:55 am. Students may choose from option A or option B. 3 choices from the offerings must be made including one fruit or juice. Additional servings are not available. If a student arrives later than 7:55 am and needs breakfast, he/she should notify a teacher or the kitchen manager on duty. The Pennsylvania legislature is offering breakfast for free to all students this year, regardless of free/reduced/full pay status. Please try our breakfast program. The children love it!

Lunch

Lunch, as mandated by the Nation School Lunch Program, includes meat or a meat alternative, vegetables, fruit, whole grain bread or alternative, and low-fat or fat-free milk. Children must choose a minimum of three items offered with one of the items being either a fruit or vegetable. Every lunch currently has four entree offerings. The children are most welcome to take multiple vegetable offerings and fruit offerings as part of the meal.

Cost of lunch is $3.20 ($0 for the reduced meals program as a state program is covering the cost of reduced-price meals) for the 2023-2024 school year. Students in grades 5 and 6 may purchase an additional entree for $1.40 (main entree portion only, no extra sides included). Low-fat white milk, nonfat flavored milk, and water are available for purchase individually for $0.60 for those packing lunch or as a second beverage with a lunch meal. 

Please note: All water bottles are $.60. The only beverage included with the meal is milk. Water is always available in the lunch room at the water cooler at no cost. Students are always permitted to bring their reusable water bottles to the cafeteria at lunchtime.  We encourage them to take advantage of the free water always offered.

New NSLP nutritional guidelines implemented

Students are now required to take a half cup serving of fruit or vegetable in addition to 2 menu choices such as a lean protein and grain/bread or milk.

  • 100% fruit juice may only count as a meal component when offered on the menu as a fruit choice.
  • New regulations will increase the number and variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains while reducing the amount of sodium, saturated fat and eliminating trans fat.
  • Guidelines regulate the number of calories in a student meal based on grade level. Our school is classified as K-8. Calorie counts will be 600-650 for lunch 400-550 for breakfast.
  • Flavored Milk such as chocolate, strawberry and vanilla must be fat free.
  • Water has to be available during lunch that is free and accessible to the children. We have placed a water cart with plastic cups in the lunch room the children may freely access throughout lunch. Students are always permitted to bring their reusable water bottle to the cafeteria at lunchtime.  We encourage them to take advantage of the free water always offered. All prepackaged water bottles will be charged to student accounts.
Manage Your Student’s Cafeteria Account Online
  1. Access the payment portal at: https://schoolpaymentportal.com
  2. Click the “Create Account” button to activate your account.
  3. Once logged in to your account, click “Add Student”
  4. Use the SCHOOL Zip Code (17402) to find and select St. Joseph School, York.
  5. Use the search function to find your student using First AND Last name (must enter both). Student ID is NOT required.
  6. Click “Add” to save the student to your account. Add other students using the same procedure.
  7. Once all students are added, use the “Make Cafeteria Deposit” button to add a deposit to their account.
  8. Once the payment for one or multiple students are added to your cart, you may “checkout” and enter your credit card information. Only credit card payments are accepted at this time with a $1 flat fee plus 2.3% of the deposit amount.

Cafeteria Purchases Policy

The goal at St. Joseph School is to provide students with healthy meals each day. We serve Breakfast and Lunch to all students in grades PreK4 through Grade 6. We participate in the National School Lunch Program, offering free and reduced meals to qualified students. We feel it is the responsibility of parents/guardians to review balance statements regularly, and to make deposits to student accounts accordingly. Student meals should be prepaid, and funds can be sent to the school to be deposited into student accounts. Notices of account balances, and of low or negative balances are sent to parents/guardians at regular intervals throughout the school year.

​Students are not denied any cafeteria purchase because of an outstanding balance owed to their cafeteria account. If the amount owed is determined by the principal to be so great as to warrant a suspension of cafeteria purchases, the parent/guardian will be asked to pack lunches for the child until the account in brought in to good standing. However, should a parent fail to pack a lunch, the child will still receive a regular cafeteria meal, which will be charged to the student’s account.

Any student who has a balance below zero in his or her cafeteria account will not receive progress reports or report cards when issued, until the account is brought into good standing. No transcripts will be forwarded to other schools unless the fees are current or paid in full. This also applies to tuition accounts and any other fees owed to the school.

​Any funds remaining in a student account will carryover to the next school year. Students who graduate will have their balance transferred to a sibling remaining in the school; or, if he or she has no siblings remaining at St. Joseph School, remaining balances may be refunded. Students who withdraw from the school may have remaining balances refunded.

​Families who have students who receive Free and Reduced meals benefits must complete a new application each school year to determine eligibility. If a financial hardship occurs at any time during the school year, families are encouraged to apply for free or reduced meals benefits for their child. National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program

St. Joseph School participates in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Students from families who qualify (under federal guidelines) will receive lunch and breakfast either free or at a reduced cost. Applications are available from the Administrative Manager or by applying online through COMPASS. Applications may be filed at any time throughout the school year for any family experiencing net income changes.
